Abstract
This study aims to reveal the innovative social interpretation used by Sheikh Tantâwi Jawhari as an effective means of renewing the Renaissance factor and combating the stagnation and intellectual backwardness that surrounded Muslims in the 19th century AD. In his book "Al-Jawâhir fȋ Tafsȋr al-Qur'an" he gives a wide space to raise social problems at his time as a starting point for the correct understanding of the Qur'an and its validity in finding solutions to developments and disasters and working to encourage Muslims to adopt the causes of progress by mastering modern sciences and correlating them with religion. This article focuses on discussing the formation of an Islamic society based on the principles of surat al-Mumtahanah through Tantâwi Jawhari's commentary. The main questions to be answered are: what is the formation of an Islamic society based on the principles of surat al-Mumtahanah in Tantâwi Jawhari's interpretation?, and to what extent does Jawhari's methodology contradict the traditional methodology in interpreting the Quran? In conclusion, Tantâwi also discussed several Islamic values related to social solidarity in Islamic society, such as women's issues, marriages of believing women who emigrated, and brotherly relations among its members. This research proves that the innovative social methodology used by Jawhari needs to be reviewed because it contradicts the basic principles of Al-Quran interpretation. In his Interpretation, Tantâwi Jauhari emphasizes his rationality when interacting with the Qur'an, and he uses absolute freedom in the use of reason in understanding and interpreting his texts.
